"It's helped me in every way possible."

Codie is a mother of five children. When referred to Multisystemic Therapy for Child Abuse and Neglect (MST-CAN®), the risks identified for Codie and her young family included domestic violence, substance use, mental health challenges, and parenting stability.

At the time of the referral, one of Codie’s children was in out-of-home care and was described as having complex needs. Their issues included running away, not following rules or attending school and participating in high-risk behaviours. Through MST-CAN®, therapeutic and practical support was immediately put in place including:

  • Safety planning developed for substance use; verbal abuse; school attendance; self-harming behaviours  and suicidal thoughts.
  • Reinforcement Based Treatment (RBT) for substance use.
  • Strategies to identify and respond to triggers
  • Development of drug refusal skills.

“It is about self-care as a mum. If I’m ok, the kids are ok. I don’t hide anymore and if I need help I lean on my support network,” says Codie.
